BEING A TEACHER IS A DIFFICULT TASK NOWADAYS, SO I DECIDED TO FOLLOW THIS PIECE OF ADVICE BY BRUCE LEE:

Another super story by Elena (2º ESO A)

  1. HOW COME THE WORD 'BLANCO' IN SPANISH MEANS 'WHITE' AND THE WORD 'BLACK' MEANS 'NEGRO?

    The colour 'white' in Spanish is 'blanco', in French it's 'blanc' , in Italian it's 'bianco' and in Portuguese it's 'branco'.
    Why then does the word 'black' in English mean 'negro'?

    In English we have the word 'black' which comes from the same root as the Spanish, French and Portuguese words. This word means the opposite of 'white'. How did this happen?

    The source of all these words is the word 'bhleg', an ancient Photo-Indo-European root word. This word means shine, burn or flash. Some languages interpreted this to mean the whiteness of a flash but others took it to be the opposite and thought it referred to what was left behind after the flash; the burnt, black, darkness.

    Simple, isn't it? Once you know it.




    WHAT COLOUR IS A MIRROR?

    You're all wrong! The color of a mirror is green! Let me tell you why.

    A white or silver object reflects all light rays; so do mirrors. However, mirrors do not reflect light in the same way as pigments do. Light is reflected in only one direction, rebounding off the surface; this is called Specular Reflection. On non-reflective objects it is reflected in all directions (diffused reflection). A perfect mirror reflects all colours equally. However, a perfect mirror does not exist. Some tiny part of light is absorbed. Green light is the range of light that is least absorbed, that is to say a mirror best reflects the light within the 510 nanometre range (green light). So, a mirror is a little, little, bit green.

    You don't believe me?

    You can test it yourself by using the method of the mirror tunnel. Place 2 mirror facing each other. They will reflect the same view back and forth. A tiny bit of light is lost (absorbed) with each reflection but green least of all. So you will see that the reflection becomes greener and greener the further down the tunnel.

    So now you know.


    SO YOU THINK YOU'VE GOT BLUE EYES?

    We know however, that 'baby' did not have blue eyes and that a clear blue sky does not really exist. A blue sky is really black. Do you think you have blue eyes? Well, your eyes are not blue in the sense that they are absorbing all light except for the blue light which they are reflecting, no, it is because of 'interference'.

    Let me explain. The sky appears blue because in the atmosphere there are molecules which are in the way of the light rays. The shorter wavelength rays crash into the molecules, but the longer wavelengths can go round them. The shorter wavelengths are the ones which we perceive as blue, when they crash they are scattered and make the sky seem blue.

    Our eyes balls have a hazy layer just like the sky. Shorter wavelengths are scattered making your eyes look blue. So you might ask why are my eyes green brown or hazel? Well that's because you have melanin in your iris which scatters more wavelengths making them look green,brown or hazel.

    Now you know the secret.
